Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the right to contest certain calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
