RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
