The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
